New guttering/fascias - is it a fair price?

I have just received a quote for new guttering/facias for our house and having never had any work like this done before, I don't know if it is a good quote or not. There is a total of about 20 metres length of new guttering/facias in white upvc with 2 drop pipes in black upvc and we have been quoted £1500 for the work. Have also been quoted another £550 for a new upvc back door. Any advice re similar work/prices would be appreciated

    Questions:

    1) Are you having full replacement boards or coverboards? I would AVOID coverboard (the one that nails onto the existing rotting wooden boards).

    2) Does this include scaffolding, or is he doing it from a ladder?

It seems that we are looking at a terrace or sd house here. What about gable ends etc. How many metres of these need doing - are there any gable ends?

  • we paid £200 for facias, soffits, guttering and downpipes.

We're having full replacements. There isn't a gable end, the guttering goes round on the same level due to the slope of the roof and they will be using scaffolding
  • I was in a similar position to yourself and had a quote at £2000 (including door) but i'm a keen diyer so i did mine with my brother. The parts included fascia board all round (L shape 8inch) hollow tripple tong and groove lookalike on the underside all round, white square gutter and 2 downpipes. I hired 2 DIY type scaffold towers at £30 for the weekend. The roof/gutter parts cost £200 from a builders merchant and the door cost £200 from wickes. Including nails, trims, and some silicon the whole lot cost £450. It took me and my brother a weekend to do it and we'd never done it before. This means i saved £1550. I guess the company (2 people) who quoted may have done it quicker but looking at their work 3 years later (neighbours in my road) you can see boards sagging and it just doesn't look as neat as mine. Assuming these guys would have done my job in 1.5 days (we took 2) then they would have been earning £500 per day on what is an unskilled job! Most people would only have to work one day a week at these rates! You could earn £100K per year and some would be unclaimed. In my opinion my quote was a rip off but it's only my opinion.
    Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j

  • I live in a semi-detached and to get the guttering ,soffits and facsias done about 5 years ago cost £1000.

£1500 seems to be in the right ballpark.

My guess is that's around £400 materials and the rest will be scaffold and labour.
