Closing until next year

As wedding season is over, I have decided to close my ebay shop until next spring. 1. There's no sales (a big must for a seller) and 2. I now have time to try other things. My question is, do I have to tell hmrc that I don't intend to begin selling again until next spring? I am looking at starting up before the end of the tax year but 100% sure yet.

No, you're not closing the company down or leaving your sole trader/self employed status.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0

The answer is no.
However, as a pure business decision, I see closing down until next year as madness.0 -
yes the main wedding season is over, but some people may still get married over the winter months, but you should try something else over the winter months.
with me, all year i run a web hosting business, during the summer i trade at summer fairs/country shows with toys ( tried markets but with toys you need kids, so weekdays it was dead) winter months i sell ink cartridges etc. so i end up working all year but as others say to close down for what 6 months is pure madness0 -
Thank you for the replies. If I was earning a decent amount from being self employed, I would agree with you about shutting down. However, I earn so little from my ebay business, I earn more doing surveys! I'm hoping to get a job instead. I also have other things I'd like to try out.0

As your self employment isnt ending then you have no need to say anything at all unless you are claiming working tax credits in which case you would need to tell them as you would be working less than 30hrs a week.
I am in a similar position - I have events work for next year but none for this although I did have to notify HMRC about my change in hours (I am now claiming JSA because I am working less than 16hrs a week). Doesnt stop me from looking for more permanent work though because it would be great to have a regular wage coming in.0 -
No you don't, but as a few others have said, if the eBay business is taking little to no time, what's the odd trip to the post office once a week to keep it going?0

Don't know much about ebay, but if you close are you sure people will come back when you reopen?:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0

When do you think people get married then?
All the wedding venues around here are booked up throughout the year
I remember you said back in June you weren't selling anything then either

... and you only started in April didn't you?

Are you sure you actually have a viable business?"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

I don't think I have a viable business. I know people get married all year round but recently I'm making no sales on my items apart from one. If I can get an employer that would great - a life saver.0 -

If it's not worth it at all, just get rid.
Most people on eBay don't make money.0
