Reading to Durham Train tickets

I'm a student trying to visit my best friend in Durham for as little as possible. I've found a great deal from GNER for £10 singles from Kings Cross to Durham on the 14th and 20th of Feb. However this still means getting from Reading to Kings Cross. So far I've found this part of the journey will cost more than the second part. Are there open returns available from Reading to Kings Cross which would be cheaper than 2 singles? Any help appreciated. Any other way of getting to Durham for under £45 would also be great, I'm pretty flexible about dates and times of day.

Have you tried Virgin? They appear to have direct trains or via Birmingham.

I have. I used them last time I went. Problem is that it costs more and takes longer, although it is easier with no changes.

Coach into London?

The coaches all go from Calcot Savacentre, which is practically impossible to get to from where I live. And they go to London Victoria generally, which still means I'd have to get across London. It is a possible option though, thanks.

If you can go in the morning of 14th....

Reading to Birmingham at 9.40am or 10.10am single fare £9

then you can get Birmingham to Durham straight through for £19 single

Thanks a lot. I think I've managed to find a way to go direct from Reading for £35 by splitting tickets.

Last time I was in Reading there were commuter coaches from the centre of Reading to London

There are. The Railair link goes to Heathrow, all the other buses go from Calcot.
