Customer service in supermarkets grrrrrrrr

RANT WARNING!!!

I have just been to Mr S. I rarely shop there but I like the value hot choc and thought I would stock pile for the winter.

Few bits in the trolley and I dashed to the checkouts. Shopping scanned and the lady asked for my card but the machine had nothing on the display..........put card in (as told) and the machine pops up with can not read card  The lady said "lets try again"........fair enough, the machine still had nothing on the display so I told the lady. Finally she managed to catch the eye of her supervisor who finally came over. The lady explained what happened and he said "do you want to put your shopping back or do you want to collect it later" I said in the nicest possible way (through gritted teeth as I have now lost 10 minutes of my life) "I do not understand what is the problem?" to which he said in a loud voice "Can you pay for your shopping or not??" In front of a very long line of huffing and puffing shoppers :mad::mad:

"Yes I can pay for my shopping it is your machine playing up!!!!" to which he reset the till and it accepted my card.......no appology, nothing. I told the lady at the till how unhappy I was with being asked if I could pay for my shopping and felt poorly treated, her reply was "well all the young ones are like that!!"

By this time I wanted to go and find the manager and string him to the check out but had to pick DGD up from school.

Livid!!!!! Is it because I had mostly value items in the trolley??? He assumed I was an unable to pay person or is it more and more people are getting their cards declined at the supermarkets??? Whatever the case is CUSTOMER SERVICE would not go amiss would it??

Why? Do you work in a supermarket?

Thats irellevant. the thread title claims that all CS in all supermarkets is terrible when in fact it was just this instance on this time in this certain supermarket where they have had bad CS.

  • the treatment you had was appauling. i would make a complaint in writing and make it clear you wish your complaint to be passed to a district manager, this will put some heat on the store manager and his behaviour.

if you can tell us which super market it was we can give you contact details perhaps.

shopping may be expensive, customer service is free.

By Mr S I think they meant Sainsburys.
  • I agree, his attitude was appalling, but why are you trying to tar all supermarkets with the same brush?
  • It does seem from the title like you are making a general rant about customer service in all supermarkets not just one, if you were more specific you could get more specific advice.

The way you were treated was completely unacceptable, errors with the machines happen but asking if you can pay for your shopping in front of all those people, especially when it was their error, is wrong and the cashiers response is not reassuring either! I would put the complaint in writing, quoting both employees.

I would complain to head office about both of them. Remember: It won't get any better if the management don't know its happening!
