Gift Aid - can trustees claim it?

Was wondering if there any resitrictions on trustees donating to the charity they are trustee for and if so whether they are entitled to claim Gift Aid on the donation?
I query this as I recently ran a fundraising event which I have so far paid for out of my own pocket (since they were relatively minimal), however since there are restrictions on Gift Aid for events, I thought maybe it would be better to claim the money back that I spent, freeing up more of my own money to donate to the charity, for which I could then claim Gift Aid presumably.
Are there any restrictions - is doing the above dodgy territory?
Thanks...

I think that what you are proposing is fine: our previous treasurer used to commend this when people bought us things!
One technicality: it is of course the charity which claims the Gift Aid, not the individual trustees.
Is it worth asking whoever audits / examines your accounts?Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

I was at a HMRC presentation on Gift Aid last year, and the speaker from HMRC brought up this point and confirmed it was quite acceptable.
It is in the interests of the charity (or non charity who are eligible for Gift Aid) to pay expenses and then receive back any donations from those who wish to, and claim Gift Aid where the donor is a tax payer.0
