I'd keep it.
Theres no guarantees, but would you prefer to spend £600 and have a major malfunction? or 4K and have a major malfunction.
If it goes the wrong way, you'll still have £3400 to spend + whatever else you can put away between now and any problem.
The steering rack. Is it something you noticed or something the garage said?0 -
1. NSF lower suspension arm (done as car was dangerous otherwise)
2. Rear exhaust silencer blowing
3. Annual service
4. Slight play in steering rack
5. Rear brake shoes worn
6. Front tyres wearing on inside edges (not imminent but will need.doing)
7. Check front tracking
1. Good!
2. Cheap
3. Will need doing whether or not you change car -
4. Leave it - budget for next MoT
5. Could need doing on new (2nd hand) car within a year
6. Root cause probably 1.) above - probably won't get any worse - consider swapping front tyres to back
7. Free at some Fast fit type places.
Keep the car - 1/2 of the jobs above can crop up on a car of any age.Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0 -
The 2.0 HDi is a reliable old generation engine and the body is in good condition. Keep it and follow the (very good!) advice above.0

The steering rack is something the garage noticed - I knew there was something up with the steering (hence no. 1 being fixed on the list), but they pointed out the steering rack (and other bits and pieces on the list). To be honest I'm a bit of a dizzy airhead with cars - unless a wheel drops off I'm not very clued in. Which is shameful, but the truth!
Anyway, having pondered and read all the responses above (and thank you to everyone for really useful advice) I'm keeping the car for the time being, and scheduling the work needed over the next 2 or 3 months, depending on urgency.0 -
