New Kitchen Work Top

I'm going to change my horrid white worktop and would like anyone who has theirs done to give me some tips.

I like the black Granite top, the shiny one, but i was told the shiny surface scratches easily and leaves marks  Is that true?

Also i have white appliances so would a black worktop with beige cupboards look alright with white? My cupboards are white, but i can always paint them a beige colour to match the black worktop, or would the black worktop go with white cupboards???

Tips please, what have you got?:D

I had the high gloss one and it was awful. Water marks scratches etc. Only looked nice when it had been shined. Only had it a year and got rid as i hated it that much. I think black worktop (not gloss) should look fine although it difficult to be sure without seeing it.

black worktop looks great with white cupboards i have matt black (with fine white dots)top with gloss white cupboards, i love glossy tops but you must be prepared that under the lights they show fine scratches, even the showroom one looked scratched when i chose my kitchen, if you were to buy granite it is better as it is solid but very expensive i love the black gloss one with the silver shiny bits all over but it was far too expensive (though if i had the money that wouldve been the one for me!!!) good luck and stay away from MFI my kitchen is from there and it is a nightmare say no more just trust me!

Is the laminate the same as the glossy granite?? Also how dark is the matt black? I'm not using MFI, my friends hubby is doing it for me :D He can get it cheaper for me as he's a builder.

2 of our friends have black glossy worktops and they say water marks are a nightmare. You can't just wipe over with a cloth and leave it. They both use window cleaner for a good shine.
We have matt black work tops with little dots on, its more of a dark grey than black though.

  • I have a black granite worktop, and I love it. Although water marks are a pain, but I just wipe down the surface with a dish cloth after doing the washing up. I've had mine for about 3 years now and have not noticed any scratches at all. I have white / silver appliances and light oak cupboards and as far as I'm concerned it's a good looking kitchen.

If you do go with granite I've found that best way to clean it is with Cif, then use a household polish to buff it up. I'm also in a hard water area, so vinegar is used to get rid of the more stubborn water marks on the drainer.

Thank you Chibi and Co, i guess having black glossy granite is fine if you don't mind buffing it up :D They do look very nice. Hmm i'll have to think on this one :D
