Hi

We are currently with British Gas for this (yes, I am thick as !!!!) but am looking to change. We moved in about 18 months ago and as it was coming up to winter and it was our first home and the bolier was old decided to go for a high level of cover (Homecare 300 as its now called). Looking to switch but not sure what I need from new cover. Looking at Uswitch my only alternative appears to be Npower and this could save me £100 pa, however, it would not offer the same level of cover, in particular it does not inc an annual service, nor scale damage, nor, i think, plumbing or drains, which BG does. I just wondered what people might think is best, particularly with regards the inspection - do i need one? How much would it be if we got it separately?

Sorry for rambling and thanks in advance for ny answers!
And if, you know, your history...

If you do a search there are loads of threads and hundreds of posts on the subject of BG's CH cover etc.

There are very mixed views on how effective BG are - some love em, some hate em! - but most agree it is very expensive. Also most treat it mainly as insurance; albeit with a very high premium!

I don't believe there is any other service with its own dedicated fitters etc. I think I am correct in saying that all of the other schemes just have a network of local plumbers that are contacted if you have a problem.

There is little doubt that to 'self-insure', eg pay for repairs as/when required, will be the best bet for most. However that largely depends on finding a plumber that will turn out at short notice and won't rip you off - most of us can't find such a beast!
