second hand phone

I brought a phone from carboot (locked to vodafone) i put my new vodafone sim and it works fine but if i try and ring out or send txts it says no signal even though its showing me 3 bars. Could this be an ex contract that has been locked by the network? If so is there anyway to get it unlocked?

Might be blacklisted. Try contacting vodafone and given them the serial or imei number they might be able to check.

Or its the wrong sms message centre number in the settings.

if its blacklisted does that mean its no good?

Yes, its illegal to remove a bar on a blacklisted handset. It sounds like it was either stolen or lost and the original owner reported it to the network and the IMEI has been barred.

It would only work on networks outside the UK.
