Not sure what to do anymore with Britsh Gas

Hi all,

I am hoping someone can help me with a way forward with British Gas.

I moved into my flat at the end of July and had pre payment meters for both gas and electric, both with BG.

I asked BG to change them both to normal billing meters and this is where the fun began. They missed a couple of appointments and I had to spend a lot of time on the phone chasing them up. Finally I got my new meters installed and this is where it went wrong.

BG still think I am on pre payment meters and will not acknowledge or begin to accept I now have billing meters. I have spent endless hours on the phone, wrote letters trying to convince them I have billing meters but I get told, I dont, Im a pre payment customer. I have given them all the serial numbers off both meters but they say they dont have a record of that meter in their system.

I am 100% a BG customer as I still get letters related to my pre payment meters. Last one was a few days ago saying the price is going up.

Its got to the point now where I am actually scared of using any gas or electric incase I am running up a massive bill. I know eventually they will see I really am on billing meters and want a large sum of money for what I have used.

Hoping someone can suggest what I should do!

Thanks

I switched back to credit meters 4 years ago and still every time I switch electricity companies they send me a key. I've given up.

You are ruuning up a bill and if you are so scared of using any energy you should of stayed on prepayment. Put aside some money every week/month and the big bill you run up will not be a surprise.

    They'll figure it out eventually.

Same happened to me. They did in the end agree I had the meters and bill me but they still send electricity accounts for the non-existant prepayment meter even now. And it's still in the name of the previous occupant.

You do know don't you that you are entitled to £20 compensation for each missed appointment and £20 for them not paying you it automatically each time? I got £80 from that for two missed appointments to change the meter.

You should send a letter, signed for delivery to the complaints department at British Gas setting out clearly what has happened and claiming the compensation at the same time.

On the elec meter there should be a tag attached stating the date the meter eas exchanged, old meter serial number and meter readings from old & new meter. Photograph this and email it to BG. Do the same if there is one on the gas meter.

    1. Do NOT call BG, it is a waste of time.
    2. Send them a recorded letter telling them that you want to pay quarterly, and ask them to send you a bill. That's it. End of story.

That is all you have to do. You have now done more than you have to, and they will never be able to to give you a hard time. Up to a year, they will have to give you a reasonable payment option. Anything over a year.................... you don't have to pay!
