You aren't going to like hearing this but it's lending policy for anyone previously bankrupt to be immediately declined for a mortgage.
So you're saying anyone that's been bankrupt is never allowed a mortgage for the rest of their life..?

Technically, yes. If the bank know about the bankruptcy now that information will be retained by them.

If they don't after six years of being discharged then it won't necessarily be revealed by a credit search. Though if asked of course you would have to declare it.

The bank's stance has been toughened in recent years - in the past I have managed to get the occasional one agreed - and perhaps things will change again.

I didn't mean I want a mortgage through the bank. I want the account to add to my credit rating to eventually get a mortgage from somewhere else.

smulx, use Noddle for free or pay £2 to Experian, say, for a statutory credit report. Your current account should be there with £0 balances and limits to show no informal or formal credit arrangements are in place but still demonstrating that you're managing your current account responsibly.

One thing with Natwest and RBS if you applied for a bank account there was a certain question? Can't remember how it was phrased, but have you ever been declared bankruptcy. Only a few banks actually ask this question. Think Nationwide do and another building society, out of interest do Natwest still have this on their application?
My friend applied to them about 2 year's ago and because she had been bankrupt (not when she applied, had built up a good credit history) she told me on the online application it asked this question, she had to tell the truth, said yes and the application ended:eek:
