Candy fridge-freezer help - light but no sound!

Hi - I'm looking for advice, please!
This afternoon I noticed the flashing warning light. Freezer food seemed frozen, fridge food maybe a little warm. I checked the user booklet and it told me to contact the local electricity company or service dealer, which seemed a bit drastic. Having checked the internet, I vacuumed all around in case it was a dust/fluff problem and that didn't work. So I switched it off for 10 mins (which worked 3mths ago when I thought it was broken).
When I switched it back on again, it murmured for a second then nothing. I left it a while and tried again - same response. A few times. But the normal "I'm on" light is working fine, so I assume that the power is on. I read elsewhere online that if you have some sound when you switch on, it's probably not the thermostat.
Would I be right in thinking it must be the fan or the compressor, or am I completely off the mark? And are those quickish, not too expensive problems or is it a gonner? Is there anything else I can do? It's 9yrs old.
Thanks so much in advance (with hope:))

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply!!
That's that then - I'll have to borrow a copy of Which! I suppose 9yrs isn't too bad. I'm just so grateful that it packed in now and not the last time it sounded dodgy (the night before I was going away for a week!). Plus now I know how a FF works:)...ish!
I had the FF doors open a few times (whoops!) - looking to see if any holes were blocked and trying to work out if the unmoving bits in the back of the freezer section were the fan! - I'm not sure how long it'll stay mildly cold... so I offloaded all my frozen stuff to a kind friend's freezer:) As for the rest, I suppose I'll have to start my diet the day after tomorrow...0
