Best London 1 day travel option?

Options
Im going down to London in a couple of weekends with the wife and kids (13 & 11). We are staying at Heathrow and planning on going into London itself on the Saturday to do the sights etc.

What is the best travel option as far as ticket goes? From what I can see on the TFL site there is a 1 day travelcard and the visitor Oyster card. To me it looks like the 1 day travelcard would be better value (we would be travelling from Z6 - Z1 to get into London from Heathrow.

Am I right in thinking the 1 day travelcard is unlimited travel?

Would really like some help with this to get the best deal.

Cheers

£8 (£3 for the children) for a zone 1-6 all day travel card. Can be used on buses, tubes and trains.

Yep just come back from London, and the osyter card is not what it says on the website, it looks cheaper but I would recommend the one day travelcard, also with the oyster card you have to be careful when going through the barriers it may charge you twice if not scanned correctly... Hope this helps
  • Thanks for the info guys. Looks like the one day travelcard will be the better value for us. Can they be bought on the day once we are there or do I have to order them in advance?
  • The Oystercard caps at the daily travelcard price if your using PAYG. But the paper ticket is better for you as you are only there for the day so you dont have to mess about with deposits for the card and getting it refunded when you leave.

If you have a friends and family railcard, you can reduce the price to £5.30 ads and £2 kids by buying from your local station before you leave. Ask for a one day travelcard from Wimbledon, make sure they date it for the day you want to use it. No need to go anywhere near Wimbledon to use the travelcard.

Otherwise just buy on the day at Heathrow at the £8/£3 stated above.

Depending on what attractions you want to visit

may be of interest. 2 for 1 admissions.

Your rail tickets can be travelcards (but not Oyster) but it must be bought at a rail station, not a tube station. There is no rail station at Heathrow, which does pose difficulties for you. Your local rail station should be able to assist - as long as you can find a clerk who understands what you need and how to issue it

Be careful of this as Wimbledon's in London zone 3 and this would normally result in a zones 1-3 travelcard being issued and you'll need one for zones 1-6, which you could specifically ask for.

Unless someone else knows of a reason to use cite Wimbledon when buying the travelcard it might be safer to ask for one from a zone 6 station such as Feltham.
  • Is Heathrow Zone 6?
  • Heathrow is Zone 6 but your travel card is not allowed to be used on the Heathrow Express services or on the connects services past Hayes & Harlington
