Problem with dishwasher moulded plug

Wife put d/washer on & part way through cycle it tripped the electric & blew the fuse in the plug. When i had a look for the problem it was the moulded plug.
I used it in a different socket with a new fuse & you could hear it arching(sp), it again tripped the electric & blew the fuse, but also left scorch marks on the socket, plus the plug fuse & holder were a bit black.
I cut off the moulded plug & replaced it with a new one & then ran the dishwasher through a cycle with no problems.
Any ideas on what caused the problem with the plug in the first place.
