    Which May 2011

Microsoft Security Essentials FREE 72% (simple, swift to threats, few features, not many daily updates)

AVG Anti-Virus FREE 70% (clear/concise alerts, can slow down scans, log file jargon but online support good)

Avira Antivir personal FREE 61% (setting up easy, built-in help is excellent, warnings too technical, updates infrequent)

magazine reviews are often one persons opinion based on criteria they think are important, not a thorough review of the points that really matter - ie what percentage of real threats out there does it deal with effectively before they do damage, how many false positives, and how intrusive is it/what is the effect on performance after loading it on a computer.

antivir has better detection than either of the other 2 in the tests I've seen, but you can't tell that from those percentage marks

more bloat, more potential for popups and phone calls in a panic, and hardly worth it for 14 days realtime protection

I was just concerned that you were discouraging people in general from trialling the realtime protection.
But I can see that you just meant it for this case.

I had a trial of Mcafee and got rid of it before it had expired. Reason: Slow, inflexible(you can't exclude a drectory on the consumer version) and replaced it with Avast which is quicker and less intrusive and updates automatically with no fuss. IMO when scanning it is less heavy on resources than MSE which is otherwise also good.
  • Many thanks Avast it is then!
