Can I just say in my defence - I realise that crosses can have issues of both parents but even taking a dog from a rescue might throw up these problems. We've had Diego for 6 years - no health issues so far - & we didn't pay more than a pedigree as even we're not that daft.

We didn't get a dog to "be pretty" and to be carried in a handbag. We already had a JRT/Westie cross & now have a JRT as well and lived, at the time on a farm so dogs were allowed to run to their heart's content. And why not a rescue - we'd had several rescue dogs prior to that but found it too hard when we had to have them put to sleep as we always fell for the big oldies.....

if anyone has any tips on finding breeders etc we would be grateful.

Here's a good read for deciding if a breeder is any good or not
    http://www.apbc.org.uk/articles/good_breeder
We would consider a rescue dog yes, just i have heard rescues can be very strict with their criteria and as we cant guarantee one of us will be home all the time i'm not sure they would consider us.

I work fulltime and adopted a rescue dog, no problem. Different people in the household worked different shifts, similar to your situation, and rescue was happy with this. Smaller rescues tend to be a bit more flexible than larger organisations like the RSPCA/Battersea/etc. as you tend to deal with the people who make the big decisions, the kennel staff ARE the head office in many smaller rescues, which allows them to consider homes on an individual basis.
ut even taking a dog from a rescue might throw up these problems.

Fair point but by adopting a rescue, while you may face the same issues, you're not funding a breeder who is producing these dogs with issues. I'm not against breeding, just bad breeding, and advise people not to fund/support the latter by buying puppies from BYBs or puppy farms.
  • I have a cream-coloured, long-haired dachshund - allegedly a mini, but rather too chunky for a mini, while being a little on the small side for a standard.

Henry is now 15½ years old and still thinks he's about 6! Think big dog attitude in a small dog body. As for yapping - he doesn't yap at all, he has a big dog bark. I have had callers wondering where the Alsatian is. He has a touch of arthritis in one shoulder, so I limit his walks and make up for it by taking him for hydrotherapy once a week.

His health has generally been good - however, back in 2007, he suffered what was diagnosed as a fibrocartilaginous embolism, from which he was lucky enough to make pretty much a full recovery.

He manipulates me mercilessly, and I am constantly at his beck and call! :D

    Update!

We are going to see some Dachshund puppies on Saturday, we've taken a lot of time to look around as standard sized are harder to find, really wanted to avoid epupz/gumtree etc after reading lots of info from you knowledgeable people here. In the end we have found a breeder through one of the Dachshund Societies, these people seem to be involved in showing them etc so I hope we have found someone reputable. Very excited but I think equally scared at the same time lol!

We are getting our new puppy on the 15th, the breeder has been fantastic, he answered any questions we had and has given us lots of info. He is involved in showing and all his dogs seem like much-loved family pets. Some pics as promised, cannot wait to get him!
