Continuous cover needed but gap in insurance. What to do now?

Need a bit of advice - can find out other details if needed.
Friend's car insurance ran out. He didn't notice and continued driving the car as normal.
About two weeks later he notices he has no insurance (or so he thinks) and immediately gets on the phone to buy new insurance from that day.
Checks credit card statement and finds that the old insurance has auto-renewed and taken the premium.
Gets on the phone to old insurance company to cancel auto-renewed policy as he already has a policy.
A letter has arrived today to confirm the auto-renewed policy has been cancelled back to the beginning and a full refund of premium given which is good but means he now has a two week ish gap when the car was not insured at all.
q1) Does this count as a 'cancellation' of insurance in terms of declaring cancelled insurance.
q2) Should he do anything about the two weeks or so the car was on the road which it has now not been insured for? If so should he ask the old company for two weeks cover or the new company? He can't declare SORN as that is obviously not the case.
Any advice appreciated.

1) No
2) He should forget about this and has no need to take any further action.0 -
Thanks Quentin. That's a relief!0

I suppose the strictly honest thing would have been to cancel the auto-renew insurance but explain that you did want to pay for 2 weeks of it. It wouldn't have been retrospective insurance, because you were actually covered only didn't realise it.
If they say you can't do that, then by implication they are saying you had the cover free of charge. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
