Prepayment meter key misbehaving to my benefit

Hi,

I've tried doing a forum search for this but with no success. I have an electricity prepayment meter in my new flat (as the previous tenant had problems with her bills). I have been using the key for a few weeks. Yesterday I bought £10 credit at the newsagent, but when I put the key in the meter nothing happened. So I took the key out and re-inserted it a few seconds later. Suddenly my balance was credited by approximately £63!. My first instinct was to call the company (e-on), but after ten minutes waiting in the queue I hung up as my mobile was running low.

Has this ever happened to anyone else on here? And what happened next?.

Thanks

  • well. let me tell you this
the previous tennant would have given a meter reading ( to get bk any credit, etc)
what you are getting now is not free electric
you will pay for it eventually.
just ring them and tell them.
they may give you a couple of quid for free
    credit card bill. £0.00
    overdraft £0.00
    Help from the state £0.00

Sounds like a rogue key, trust me itron will catch you and report you to eon then you will have RPU on you and extra charges.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • It happened to me once, but i only got £9 - we used this and then next time we topped up, it only added a pound once the key was put in. i would try and get hold of your electricity supplier, we had no end of problems with our old supplier because of that £9 and was told that we had a bad debt on our account - that was less than a week old at that point.
    ;)

did you register with eon as a new tenant when you moved in? if so then you should have received a new key

Thank you all for your responses. I didn't mean to come across as a "chancer" :D I have contacted e-on about this now and everything is in hand. Many Thanks :)
