What Is The Best Virus/Firewall Protection?

I want to protect my laptop from future viral/spyware attacks. What is the BEST anti virus/firewall software I can buy to do this?
I did have Norton, but unfortunately it slowed my computer up terribly and so had to uninstall. I got McAfee preinstalled with my laptop, but again uninistalled this because of the constant pop-ups (but as this a wise move?")
If I could find the ideal anti-virus and firewall solution, I would be really elated.

As I keep saying - There's no such thing as the "Best".

What you'll get by asking is a million and one opinions.
You are your computers first line of defence, not the AV. No AV will protect against every threat. They all miss some that others detect and vice versa.
You have to look at other things - Is the OS kept up to date - Are 3rd party programs kept up to date to mitigate the threat of exploits - Am I, or any one using the PC, indulging in risky behaviour; Opening email attachments and or clicking links - visiting dubious & potentially unsafe sites - Downloading cracks/warez - using P2P clients to download potentially unsafe executable data from unknown sources etc, etc.0 -
if you dont want pop ups the best free one is Avast, if you dont mind a pop up once a day Avira as also excellent
paid for - your looking at Kaspersky (can be gotten free if you bank with Barcleys) or Nod32, others do perform well (and sometimes better) but these 4 are consistantly good and are pretty easy to use
- please note that this can change over time so its always worth keeping your eyes on AV comparatives
Windows firewall is fine for 99% of all people, especially considering most people connect to the internet through a router which will usualy have a hardware firewall included.
Malwarebytes anti-malware as a additional on demand scanner to run once or twice a month.
dont really need anything more unless you suspect an infectionDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
