Housemate cranked heat up to 31 for hours, much difference on consumption?

Hi, last night I went out for around 5 hours and came back to a hothouse! My housemate had put the heating on but cranked the thermostat in the hall up to 31 degrees! Phew! I am guessing with the heating not kicking in as the thermostat was on 20 and it was already 20 in the hallway she just cranked it up to the max!. Will need to explain how it works! Now there are TRV's on the radiators and the boiler is on about 60 degress flow temp, will this have increased gas consumption massively or will the TRV's have regulated things? I know I am probably worrying over nowt but we have worked so hard to build up a credit of £300 pounds on the gas account I dont want to see it vanish in a flash before we really see winter!

CC limits £26000

Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.

Youre right, you are worrying over nowt, the cost will be negligible agains a £300 credit.
You have probably lost more in interest by not having your £300 in an ISA, lol.
Now the energy company will get the interest on the £300

  • Lol don't worry soothyerboots it went OFF the moment I got in, I was melting! Thankfully the radiators in my room are down to 2 on the TRV so that was quite cool. And cheers McKneff I am a bit less anxious now! The money is there and I am quite happy, the interest on £300 wouldn't be worth ther faff of having to make an extra payment on catchup in the new year or getting BG not to increase the DD to cover extra consumption!

50p....I don't think so it'll be much higher than that. The OP did say 5 hours. If the boiler is rated 24kw then it's around 120kWh at 3p for a unit of gas that'll be about £3.60.

The OP said that there are TRVs on the radiator so they will determine the temperature of the rooms.

Even if they didn't have TRVs the boiler wouldn't be firing continuously using 24kW. With the radiator water temp set to 60C the boiler would be cycling on and off - and modulating on most boilers.

I have my wall thermostat at near maximum most of the time when heating is on, but room temperatures are controlled by TRVs - off in rooms not in use and set appropriately in the rooms occupied.

The only real disadvantage of this method(which is not recommended) is that the pump is running all the time.; but I don't want a thermostat in the hall to have any control of my heating.

P.S. I know all the technical arguments about CH control and - mandatory wall thermostats etc etc.
  • my word. i am sure you have more things to worry about.
    its a couple of quid.
