But it's not a convector heater (which I've never found very effective), it's a fan heater which doesn't smell and which does actually turn off once it gets to the pre-set temperature. At least that's my understanding.

And also AIUI there's nothing else quite like it - unless someone can point me to a fan heater which doesn't get dusty, and therefore doesn't smell!

I know people either love or hate Dysons. Personally I love their vacuum cleaners, haven't had problems with them breaking etc.
Just to update this, we decided against the Dyson (although I'd still love it!) and bought the De'Longhi one which was a best buy in November Which.

It's much better than I thought it would be: it's a tower fan heater, but it doesn't smell like I remember they used to, and I suspect it won't get as dusty and can be easily cleaned anyway.

We only turned our heating on last weekend, and only then because DH was poorly. Now he's better I'm going to ask if he wants to keep it off during the week, or only have it come on first thing in the morning, and rely on the fan heater in the evenings. That has got to be cheaper than heating the whole of the house when there's just the two of us in it.

I have just ordered the washing machine make that I have always wanted. A miele. A cheap beko £167 came with the house and I am so fed up of a 40 cotton wash taking almost 3 hours and it isn`t energy efficient. I went on the miele site and did the `help me choose` thing and found the ideal 7kg machine which came with a free 10 year parts and labour guarantee and free delivery and fitting and a take away re the beko. The guarantee alone is worth £149 and to me that was near enough to the £165, so I snapped it up before the expiry date. It is a w5846. Needless to say I am now washing everything that needs washing before the beko goes, all the turtle mat rugs have been done including the ex large runners and one sheeps rug so far

We have stone floors all downstairs in our house and they act as a heat sink ie to moderate the temperature all year round but the hall is on the north side and is cool so 4 turtle mats are coming today, 3 for the hall and one for the bathroom. All nice colours and large. I have had these mats for many years and they work so well and wash easily. I use 2 ex large by the kitchen sink and 2 ex large by the wide doors to the patio.

I don`t know if I said on this thread but I did buy 3 lakeland towel warmers, they are only 90w each and I have taken to standing one at the side of the hall and one on the landing and the third is switched on at 9pm to give the bedroom a little boost. They are all on timers and are very neat and slim. So far so good re my new heating system, it is all working extremely well and we haven`t had to put the stove on at all. We do have a tonne of pellets and will switch it on when we get the consistent cold that usually comes around christmas but with that comes lifting the bags and moving them to the house then having to get another tonne delivered and moving that lot as well from the road side. Getting ourselves fixed up with an alternative heating system for when we get older was a good idea. Even dh thinks the new system is wonderful. I have kept a log of all electricity readings and costs over the past year and also pellet cost and have made a graph and we have to do at least another whole year to evaluate the new system properly but I will get a pretty good idea by the end of december. I do bear in mind that november has been very different this year so we need to evaluate over a few years in order to reduce errors

edit: the mats have arrived and are lovely and soft and they make the hall feel warmer. A great company to deal with, ordered friday and already down. I`ll be washing them to get rid of any fluff and it makes them more absorbent, all in the beko before the new machine arrives

I second kittie's opinion of turtle mats, they are excellent!

The radiator booster which Which said was worth buying finally arrived today. Will report back once I've had a play ...

I am a confirmed gadget freak and bought the Dyson. What a great heater, the iron and blue design looks funky, works well with no smell and little noise.

Its impossible to get stuff dry today and I couldn`t help myself and got washing, one sheepskin rug and one xl new turtle mat and I have found a good way to dry them. We have mechanical stack ventilation in our house ie silent fan is always on and the vents in all wet areas and kitchen have humidity sensors so I dry in a room with a vent if the line outside is no good. The sensors open and close the vents as required

I opened a very versatile metal airer and it easily went over a 90w towel warmer so it was 1/3 and 2/3 with a good high space above. I set it up in the utility and draped the sheepskin on the 2/3 side and away from the warmth and the turtle rug is spread over the top. I am very pleased as that is now a small and cheaper version of the lakeland airer

I also did a rough comparison of electricity usage over the last 2 months this year compared to last year and it is 110 units more. I pay 15p a unit (good energy) so that is is about £8 a month more so far. It will be interesting later when I can properly compare the present electricity-only system to pellets plus electricity. I just need to get some proper graph paper, the pc graphs are not what I want

missile, wow, its hard to explain how good they are. I love the way they are able to throw the heat all around the room

omg, I got some graph paper to print

We can both hear the fan running, and it's an annoying noise ... worse than our fan heater.

Why is it socially acceptable in Britain to arrive in outdoor footwear in all weathers and expect to wear it in someone else's home?

In the days when the majority of people wore clogs and the rooms were bare boards and sprinkled with sand/sawdust there was some logic.

In this day and age is seems medieval to me.

I suppose we need to have a supply of slippers for guests to wear. I don't like cold feet, but I wouldn't want to wear snow boots or walking boots in someone else's house.
