Press the Insert key as see if that cures it.0

when you say unresponsive, do you mean it keeps crashing?
If so, it may be corrupted. Try reinstalling word if you can or try a different processor.0 -
If it has only just started, try doing a system restore to a point where it was behaving itself. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

I used to drive Word 2003 for a living and in my experience these are the most common causes.
1) Too many pictures in the file and not enough RAM on your PC. Typical file sizes are in the MB range - this is bad news. The cure is to convert the pictures to jpeg and re-import the jpegs.
Easily done with MS paint, cut and paste the picture into paint then save as jpeg.
2) Using fast saves. This saves your document once then saves the changes. This guaranteed to corrupt a file.
Cure tools>options>save then uncheck allow fast saves
Save your file, close Word and then re-open
3) Using save multiple versions. Same as above, disable in File>versions
4) Even worse is using master documents. Just don't do it, ever. By all means make a bunch of smaller files and combine at the end.
5) Template rot, have a look here
Basically, close word, find and rename normal.dot to normal.old
Word will create a new Normal.dot template when it next opens.
How to recover a corrupt document
Finally always use windows to save a numbered spare copy of your important document before you start working on it. Panoia is a good thing when you are working with Word.

What are you saving too? If it is on a dodgy memory stick that cause such an error.0

Until you solve it you could consider reducing the autosave interval0

Download, install, update and run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes' AntiMalware. When complete, choose 'Remove Selected' if there is anything to remove and Reboot your computer.
After restart, open the program again and go to 'Logs'. Double click on the log produced for today and post the contents here.
Then when can take a look at which programs and how much RAM that you have installed.0 -
