Think I've ruined my stainless steel fire

Hi I got fingerprints on the stainless steel inset of my new fireplace when installing it, so I bought some stainless steel cleaner (i know...) and sprayed it on. It said to rinse it off thoroughly but I thought that it would be danerous to pour water over my electric fire! Anyway the result is that there are white streaks…

Please, please, do not use vim or ajax on stainless steel, you will scratch it to beggary and ruin it.
