More than 5 years' NCD

My car is insured with NU, who like most companies have a maximum NCD of "5 years or more". As it happens, I have more -a whole lot more!- than 5 years' NCD
Trying to switch to "Budget" (up to 9 years NCD), they are asking for a letter from my existing insurer, certifying I have 9 years' NCD. Which NU refuse to send, saying their max is 5 years... Arghh!
Are they under obligation to send a letter certifying the number of years without claims, or am I fighting a loosing battle? Their call centre bots can only read off a script...
Thanks for any advice you can offer

Many insurers only count up to 5 years and for simplicity of their systems their systems themselves only count to 5 years..... even if their system counts higher most will put in 5 even if you say you have 25 because it makes no difference (most online quote engines only have 5+ as their top level)
I assume you are a switcher and havent been with NU for many years? It may be necessary to go back to the last company than can show you had 5 or more years and then go forward getting a letter of conformation from each subsequent insurer to say you had no claims in the one year you were with them.
I would suggest that you check the NCD status with budget too... whilst some insurers have made a big thing about recognising more than 5 years NCD some of the "only 5 years ncd" actually give you a bigger discount with 5 years than others do with 9 years - Also check what happens in fault claim situation as most of them make you drop down much lower (in percentage terms) than a more traditional 5 year ncd company wouldAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

i know its a long shot but do you have any back dated insurance renewal documents. these will detail how many years NCD you will have, if your records go back a few years you should have each renewal form showing a continued 5 years, this should prove you never claimed as you continued to received 5years ncd.
With NCD i try and keep copies of renewel letters as its a historical proof of your entitlement.
hope this helps.
By the way, i am about to move from NU to Budget. Go through quidco and get £35 cashback0 -
Thanks to both...
I have tried to persuade Budget to accept earlier renewal documents as proof of no-claims, but no luck. I guess they must know they have a very competitive quote regardless...
By the way, quidco appears to offer only £25 for switching to Budget... or is there another link somewhere?
Thanks again0 -

sorry think i got that wrong. Have you tried Barclays insurance as the cashback through quidco is huge. Take this into account it could end up being cheaper than budget.0 -
Checked Barclays too but less competitive despite huge cashback, thanks for the lead though!
Just confirmed Budget (interesting their quote changes depending on whether one comes through Moneysupermarket, Confused, or Quidco!)0 -
I've had this happen to me before. Persisting with the request, escalating it to a supervisor and explaining that my new insurance provider does accept more than 5 years, has always resulted in the required paperwork being provided. Keep on at them!0
