Bereavement cancellation heartache

I have a nonchangeable/nonrefundable package with lastminute.com who have explained the cancellation charges if we cancel due to a funeral on our dep. date of a dear friend ( not a blood relation).
If we simply dont turn up for the flight, travel the next day independantly, arrive at the arranged hotel 1 day late ( with a telephone call to the hotel on the day advises of a delay) could we expect to use the original return flight or would that have been cancelled because we didn't use the outgoing flight?
This assumes that we could buy a one way replacement for the outgoing leg.
Also, could lastminute. com cancel the hotel due to our not having taken the first leg flight.

on any booked return flight, if the outward journey is not used.....the return is automatically cancelled
