IP error message

A few days ago I suddenly got a Windows notification message popping up saying something like this: "error: more than one PC on your network has the same IP address" and I have no idea what on earth it's on about. It keeps coming back. I have tried googling it and am none the wiser.

I only have one laptop so how can there be another computer? My wireless signal is password protected so no one else can be using it. I do also use an iPhone to access the Internet. Does that count as a second computer?

What's going on? How do I fix it? Should I just ignore those messages?

Thank you.

Well everything requires an IP to connect to the internet.

So the iphone may be conflicting now sure why since DHCP avoids this.

IP Addresses need to be unique, so when you have that error message it means that there is another device that has the same IP Address. Try this on your laptop:

    1.) Click the Start button
    2.) Click Run
3.) Type "cmd" without the quotes (this will open a command prompt)
4.) In the command prompt type: "ipconfig /release" without the quotes
    5.) Now type "ipconfig /renew"

This should give you a new IP Address and stop the conflict

If the PC picked up 192.168.1.2 and the iPhone was 192.168.1.3 and the iPhone was used on another wireless network where it picked up 192.168.1.2 it's possible it didn't pick up a new IP address when going back to the original (the OPs) router.

this type of error seems to becoming more common these days, especially as SG mentions, more wifi devices are being used on more than one router/network. Just one of those things to keep an eye on going forward....
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Thank you very much, but I can't find "run" in my start menu. Is there any other way of getting there?

    Thank you.

    Windows key + r :)
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Thank you. I tried it and it said: "no operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected" and then several more paragraphs of other things.

Does that mean it didn't work?

Have you tried turning it all off and on again? (modem, PC etc)

Seriously, it can often cure this soft of problem.

My modem and laptop are both turned off at night, so if that were the cure, the problem would be sorted by now. (Edit: my iPhone very rarely gets turned off, though.)
