I have decided to use these things rather than winter tyres. Admittedly I live in the south but I took them when I went skiing the last two winters and they did the job.

You do need to take them off when on clear roads or they are likely to wear out quickly but winter tyres also wear more quickly than summer ones and reduce fuel economy.

From an insurance point of view, they are not a modification since the normal tyres (and wheels) are still on the vehicle.
