I'm vegan because I was vegetarian and then discovered I have an allergy to dairy products. I have also recently discovered that I have a wheat intolerance (not an allergy, thankfully). I substitute for bread by using oat cakes, ryvitas and rice cakes. I know the first two contain gluten, but rice cakes don't. You do, however, have to get past the barrier of feeling like you are eating polystyrene!!
I cook most things from scratch. I am going to have to turn down an invitation to a Christmas dinner with a charity I do voluntary work for, as there is nothing, absolutely nothing, on the menu that I could eat. For quick snacks I tend to eat a couple of rice cakes with peanut butter.
My sister has a wheat allergy, and is also allergic to a whole raft of other things, like soy, pulses and some veg, so she has an incredibly restricted diet. She can eat Quorn products, though. I can't as they have eggwhite in them, so they're not vegan. But it might be worth a thought for some of you? Of course, as with all these things, they are also very expensiveAspire not to have more but to be more.

Hmmm? Shrouded to read people saying "just don't eat....."I am lactose intollerant, have crohns disease and ulcerative colitis and now apparently I have IBS thrown in there too (dubious). I had have to "just bit eat anything with lactose in it" my diet would be very poor indeed!
I can't eat fruit as I can't digest it. Can't eat red meat for same reason.
The free from range is disgustingly expensive and really awful in taste (the pastry especially).
For this reason I make all my own treats. I can't pop into a shop and buy a wee cake to have with my tea or a twix when I fancy it. Breakfast on the run.....no chance. Did you know there is lactose in salt and vinegar crisps?? And as for there's no lactose in cream or cheese.....stop trying to be self important and tMe the time to think that other people may be so intolerant that even 2g of lactose will make them ill.
Follow normal recipes and substitute with your own. I use vita it'd or pure dairy free spread, lactofree cream cheese, milk, hard cheese and yoghurts....I can never get the cream usually so I use a tiny bit of b!chamel in sauces for that creamy effect.
Recently I've made chicken pies, flourless chocolate cake, cheese and onion scones.....
If anyone new to this needs a hand PM me. It's awfully overwhelming especially if it's not just one food group. I own a restaurant and therefore ask my chef for substitutes/what would work/what wouldn't work.
I remember in the beginning throwing a tantrum in MrT saying "well I may as well bit bother eating at all".....I'm almost 30!!
Chin up,
xxxI'm a Crohnie and I'm proud of it!!! Also dairy free so love love love the OS thread for cooking from scratch!"Be nice to everone on the way up, you never know who you'll meet on the way back down"0 -
Hmmm? A few random words uP there on my last post...replying on a iPhone..... I also agree that eating out is a nightmare. In my restaurant everything on the menu is now labelled gluten/dairy free or vegan. I even buy in gluten free flour.
Inwas once served pesto in mashed pot once after saying I can't have dairy. Was really I'll after few mouthfulls (before noticed the taste)....then charged ms for the dish!!
Eating out should be fun and adventurous.....not a task and dangerous!!I'm a Crohnie and I'm proud of it!!! Also dairy free so love love love the OS thread for cooking from scratch!"Be nice to everone on the way up, you never know who you'll meet on the way back down"0 -

I paid for a pre-payment prescription in the hope that I got get a few loaves a month but was told by my pharmacist that Genius bread was no longer available, and instead received 6 awful vacuum packed loaves from Glutafin!
Apparently 90% of available products were removed from the prescribable list a few months ago?
Very frustrating.
Hi, I'm quite recently diagnosed coeliac too, I'm 6 months down the line and have nearly sussed the bread / prescription thing! I got a pre-payment certificate and worried like mad as all over the country PCT's have started cutting whats available to coeliacs on prescription, so I took a chance and got one anyway. Have you tried Glutafin fresh bread? It comes in packs of 8 on prescription, so is a bit of a pain as it takes over a whole shelf of my freezer, but its the best I've found so far. I still can't eat it as sandwiches (hate that claggy-ness!) but as toast its as good as non-gf bread.
Though I guess I'm lucky as my PCT hasn't cut the prescribable list yet, and I've been assured that when they do they just won't be adding new items, shouldn't be cutting current ones.
Good luck, the whole damned coeliac thing is very frustrating, and takes time to sort out!0 -
thanks for starting this thread, its important for us that have a very expensive and tricky diet for health reasons to have somewhere to rant and share experiences!0

I have a severe allergy to dairy, eggs and nuts, and have had all my life.
It doesn't really bother me much and I wouldn't say I've found it much more expensive. I cook with dairy free margarine, soya milk, sometimes egg substitute powder, and I can adapt the vast majority of recipes. I really enjoy cooking and baking though so I could see it might be more difficult for someone who didn't.
Eating out can be annoying but I think it has come on in leaps and bounds.0 -

Thanks, I'll give that one a go.
Think I need to clear out the freezer too!
The vacuum packed bread was awful, they had just substituted it as they couldn't get hold of Genius, I certainly won't be getting that one again.
I've been working my way through the options to find out whats good/bad/inedible and have found my fav pasta, flours, etc from the rest. There's so much choice with bread I wasnt sure where to start.
Genius bread is actually quite decent for sandwiches but I'll give the Glutafin one and go and see what its like. Might as well, I'm paying £10 a month for the PPC!

Just a quick question....i have just learnt to make yogurt in my easyio yogurt maker (without the sachets) for my familywhich i was really pleased with....however does anyone know if it's possible to make lactose free yoghurt using the lactose free milk?
If anyone makes it would you kindly post how you do it, thanks0 -
This morning I have been reading the 'blogging for a second income' thread. I started my own blog at the beginning of this week so these tips are really useful. . I originally started the blog as a kind of diary to keep track of what I eat whilst trying to lose weight. I realised I could also use it as diary for my ME/Lyme Disease. This is a much more fun way of keeping a diary. I then decided to do pages of other things I am interested in.Weight loss 0/2st
