Yes but the OP has stated that Paypal accounts have been compromised, so going on this basis, the holders of the'compromised accounts' must have contacted Paypal surely.

(I do realize they more than likely have not been compromised)

Not how I read it, Just getting an email doesn't mean an account has been compromised. I've got about 5 from Chase Manhattan today alone - but I don't have an account with them. I've also got the same sort of email as per the OP to email accounts that are not conencted to paypal at all.

The scammers want you to think you have been compromised, that's the whole point of the scam- a naive user might thne just let their guard down and click on a link to rectify the matter- and then really get scammed.

It can give that impression if the email contains personal information. This particular one addressed me by my real name: first name and surname. Given that the email went to a little used email account, the only organisation that knows both my name and that email address is paypal. That tallies with the title of this thread and with the fact that I used PayPal only recently - for the first time in about six years - to send money to a stranger.

I still think my PayPal account is secure to the point that no-one has actually helped themselves to my money, but there is a flaw in its working systems that leaks my personal information. This information, used in a cleverly worded email, increases the likelihood of the recipient believing it as genuine and falling for the trap. It annoys me when criminals become clever
