Hotels - single and double occupancy

At the moment this is theory only but information may be useful from those in the know.
My wife and I are struggling to get the same holiday dates for around easter - so we may plan a seperate short break - she will go for something like a couple of Spa days at Champneys and me a city break to (probably) London.

In researching hotel rates a lot of hotels charge a lot more for a single room than a double.
What would happen if I book and pay for a double but only use it myself - could they do anything?? Would they care?

Any info from anyone who has done/tried this would be appreciated.
Thanks.

The per person rate is lower for a double, not the total cost per room per night, which is based on two people.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.

the price you see quoted for a double room is per person....so if you book a double, you will be asked to pay 2 x whatever the advertised price is.

Thats why the price for a double looks lower

Would they care?...doubt it as you would be paying extra for a person thats not there.....lol

Not every hotel charges PER PERSON...alot of the time you're paying for the room..no matter if it's 1 or 2 adults...

I know that some charge per room ......

but usually the ones where the double room price "looks cheaper" than the single room price at the same hotel, is because that double room rate is based on 2 person occupancy, and therefore will be charged for 2 even if only 1 person stays...
  • Cheers for all your input so far.

UNLESS you have a awards program like we do ;) We are an Hilton Honors member and WHEN we do stay there your spouse stays free so you only pay for single rate WHICH can be cheaper but like i said..some rooms do charge per room per night..not per person! ;)
