Joint account trouble

Morning,

At the moment all my wages get paid into my girlfriends account. This works well as all the DD's also go out this account. We basically already run it as a joint account but only have the one card as its a single account.

Went to Santander on saturday to try and convert this to a joint account, but ended up having to apply which meant credit checks... This was reffered to the underwriters and then declined. The reason the lady left on the answerphone was because of "missing payments" but didn't know what it meant. Now when we applied the original lady dealing with it said it was probably reffered because my wages no longer went into my original account so looked like no money was going in etc but made a note to the uinderwriters this was because it went into the girlfriends account already.

Sooooo the questions are,

- Does this "missing payments" refer to the underwriters not spotting my wages going in to her account or does it refer to the fact I have missed some payments from my vodafone contract in the last 6 months (now settled and paid). Bit frustrating as she called from a witheld number and didn't leave a contact number.

- I only want a "basic" account. I know for a single account you can open one up without any hassle but does anywhere offer some sort of basic joint account??

- Finally if I cannot get a joint account, anyone know of a bank where it would be possible to get two cards active on an account? That is the only real problem we have at the moment, sharing the card is fine until we both leave for work and realise we need it!!

It's Santander being pants. They're good at that.

Try The Co-op Bank. They'll let you have a joint basic bank account. You can each have a debit card.

Give them a call on their dedicated basic bank account opening number 0845 602 7057 or pop into a local branch if you have one. It is quite a popular basic bank account, and account opening can take a week or two, but you certainly are pretty unlikely to come across a problem opening this account. (don't panic if you don't have a local branch - along with all the usual cash machine and cashback options, they offer real-time post office deposits and withdrawals on the account, which I find handy)
  • Had exactly the same thing, went into Santander on Monday. Asked to be added to my boyfriends account where our mortgage payments and bills come from and was told the account has been 'referred'. 3 months ago we bought and were approved a mortgage for £200,000 - but santander are having issues with me for a little current account?

If they say no, my boyfriend will happilly close the account (and his ISA) and go elsewhere!
