it's the quickest and cleanest solution assuming you have the disc

did you have any antivirus on?

if you had created a disk image beforehand, a reinstall would be easier

be careful what you plug in to backup, eg usb drives, as that may get infected too

Right, no alternative but to format my Toshiba laptop to cure this accursed virus Toolkit problem. One question, though: I need to back up my important files (mainly photos, videos, Word docs), and so have decided to order a SEAGATE EXPANSION 500GB HARD DRIVE to put the files on. Is this a good option for backing up files from a Toshiba Satellite Laptop?

Also, is the best way of dragging all my important files onto it is to first place them all in one main folder called MY DOCUMENTS, and then drag this folder right onto the Seagate hard drive?

not if you have a worm

have you checked to see if your photo's still work?

download and burn a av boot cd, eg kaspersky rescue (burn as an iso - "write image file to disc" using imgburn), and try cleaning it up first.

My photo's still open. The main problem I'm having is, as I say, when I try to use a Google search, this accursed trojan diverts me to some shopping site called Shopado and similar dodgy looking sites. I need to get rid of it so that I can browse the web without anymore danger of this happening.

Also, once I have completed my formatting and reinstalled Windows, I will need to get the BEST maximum protection for my laptop. I did have Norton Anti Virus, but found it slowed down my laptop quite considerably.

Can anybody recommend the best virus and spyware protection?

From the MS link I gave (post #10)
Win32/Ramnit also infects Microsoft Office OLE document files with ".DOC", ".DOCX" or ".XLS" file extensions.

    There's no such thing.

There's a lot more to securing a computer than just the antivirus & there's no antivirus that'll stop everything.

Have you any idea yourself how you might have got this?

I'm trying to help so don't want to come across as as preaching, but this is the seond time in a few months you've been infected. No antivirus can protect from bad habits.

Not exclusively, but generally these kinds of infections come from dubious sites and/or downloads (cracks, torrents etc).
