Hiya Ive got Win 98 First Edition (I think) and the hard drive keeps switching off. I think its about to pop its clogs. How do I copy everything thats on my hard drive that I want so I can install it in a new computer when I get one or is this not possible. ALso what do I do about prorams I have like Spybot etc - do I have to reinstall them on a new one when I eventually get one or can I copy these things too.

you cannot copy programs that are installed (program files) over only the installation files themselves and your data files.
easy way to transfer is to take the old HDD out and strap it to the new computer.0 -
Hi
With most of those free applications such as Spybot, AVG etc you can just download them again when you get your new PC.
Maybe start to make a list of the things you're going to need.

Ive got a CD-R/RW and a DVD slot but I never use them. The computer was given to me 4 years ago with all the bumf on so Ive never had to do anything. The hard drive keeps pinging and going of then I cant switch it on or off although the green light stays on. I then have to switch it on and off at the mains. Dont have any external drives to send them to and wouldnt know where to start. SOmeone gave me a portable USB thing is that any good - dont know what its for just found it in the drawer. Sorry really am quite thick with the techie side.0

Dont laugh but its a huge heavy metal thing - wheres the hard drive in it. Can see the DVD and CD-R slots at the front but how do you get the hard drive out and do you just screw it into a new computer0

the pinging noise is your HDD dying Ive heard it quite a few times.
hard disk looks like this
so you have to take it out, on the new computer best thing to do is uplug the cd drive and connect it on that cable.
then look in your my computer for the drive letter (D: probably)
go into it and copy your data over.
best to try and copy as much as you can into your my documents on the old machine, it will be easier to find.0 -

Buy a new hard drive and before your old one dies, copy it over using Acronis which is free.0 -
if you can keep the PC running for long enough, you should be able to backup your data to about 4 or 5 CD's with compression.

You could use the free Karen's Replicator to copy your data across on to a 4Gb pendrive - assuming you've less than 4Gb of data.
Then copy back across onto your new PC or Hard Drive.Where now?0 -
