Check here for sure start grant availability. If you're working, you're unlikely to get it http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/Expectingorbringingupchildren/DG_10018854
With child benefit, most people get this, it's £80 per month for your first child.
Tax credits: I can't remember if I got working tax credit while I was on maternity. Edited: it seems you can if you worked enough hours before you went on leave http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits/keep-up-to-date/changes-affect/family-change/maternity-adoption.htm#2
You can call the tax credits helpline on 0845 300 3900 to ask for further info on how to claim. Put a claim in for child tax credit though if your income is within the guidelines. As your post refers only to yourself....are you a single parent? If so, you are also entitled to file a claim for child support from the father. Or, if the father is on the scene and you are a couple, then you need to include his income for tax credits as well.0

CB is £81.20 per month for the first child.Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind. They say that talking to yourself is a sign of mental illness. So I talk to the cats instead.0
