How can I go get £3-£12 per point on the FTSE?

I've opened up an online trading account and want to make some money on the FTSE 100/250.

I want to make in the region of £3-£10 per point. How much investment would be needed to do this?

Also I've heard spread betting is a good thing and can be used instead of ETFs, which is what I am currently using. What do you think about that?

I suspect that you already have answers in mind and will be telling us all about it shortly.

If you are interested in spread betting, have a look at IG Index. Like many forms of betting, you can make (or lose) money very quickly and the markets can be very volatile so be v. careful!

    Good luck.

IMHO if you need to ask this on MSE you should not be doing it.

The simplest ways are through spread betting or CFD's. Google the differences and decide which is better for you, I use CFD's personally.

As to how much you need is more a question of how much you can afford to lose and your appetite towards risk. Personally I would not trade without at least 500x your trade size at an absolute minimum. So £1500 for one open position at £3 per point, £5000 for one open position at £10 per point. The indices are volatile and can move hundreds of points on a daily basis.

Have you traded leveraged before? If not, I would go to IG Markets and get a test account running before you commit any funds whatsoever. It is hard to realise how much risk you are taking and how fast it can go wrong without prudent money management.

This is not for everyone and you should only use money you could lose completely without any hardship whatsoever.....

    Good luck

  • You go onto IG Index and enter £3 - £12 per point and click on BUY or SELL depending on whether you think the market will go up or down.

Then you click on the opposite button to close out the trade.

    SET A STOP LOSS - ALWAYS !!!!!!!

    And may God help you!

  • Thanks to all your help guys, especially BLB53, Jegersmart and Moneysaverlog.

Most helpful and almost exactly what I wanted. It's a shame that I put some money in my other trading account already. I would liked to have used it with this IG Markets.

I'm signing up for an account now and looking forward to tomorrow!
  • IG Markets are good if you want to trade CFD's, otherwise for spreadbetting I'd use IG Index if I was you.
