Unable to hibernate: 'Microsoft.NET Framework v1.1.4322 Update'

I can no longer hibernate XP because I am getting a 'System Hibernation Failed' notice from Windows:
The service 'Microsoft.NET Framework v1.1.4322 Update' is preventing the machine from entering hibernation. Try stopping this service and try again.
Of course, good old Windows assumes you would know how to stop it whereas in reality most people don't even know what a 'Framework Update' actually is.
