Lost apps after update

I updated my iPhone 3GS to iOS5 last night. I thought I had backed up my phone before starting, but obviously hadn't as all the apps I had installed since I last synced my phone (about 2 months ago :o) have disappeared :(

Is there any way to retrieve them?

Also, my iTunes on my PC keeps randomly popping up! How do I stop it?

For the apps, you should be able to re-download them from iTunes.

For iTunes, go to the device properties in iTunes and deselect "Open iTunes when ... connected". That worked for me.

open itunes, click store, and then under quick links select 'purchased'
from there you can redownload any music, apps and books you have bought from the itunes store.

you can also do the same on the device in the respective stores.
