Agreed that the best way forward - if a landline isn't required for some other purpose e.g. ADSL, then get a number via a VOIP provider like SIPGATE and collect the voicemails online :o

Creation, Vanquis, and probably others use Landlines as part of their application verification process. Doesn't have to be an actual physical lanline from the likes of BT or Virgin Media, just an 01 number that you are reachable on.

I don't think it will make any difference. More important is that you are on the electoral roll at that address and your credit history is good.

I had a lady from the council pop round yesterday to make sure I'd filled in my electoral reg form. I thought I had (turns out it's in the cupboard, oops!) so she did it there and then. She asked me if I wanted my details available to other companies, when I asked her what she meant, she said for cold calling purposes? Eh? I immediately ticked the 'no, don't make my details available' when she said this, can't stand cold callers! Now thinking about it a) what the bleeding hell was she talking about and b) does this mean I can't be seen on the electoral roll? Will have to ring up and change it if so.

Sorry to g/c op, just interested to see what people's thoughts were as it's related to the original post.

There is two sides to the electoral role:

    The voters roll
    The edited register

The edited register is accessible by the general public, it can be viewed at reference libraries and can be access by anyone online.

Only those who don't tick this box you're referring to are on the Edited Register.

The Voters Roll shows everyone including those that have opted out of being on the edited register. This is what credit reference agencies go by, so not being on the edited register doesn't mean you're invisible, you're simply not in a publicly available list. You're only available on a list that is illegal to access without your consent.

So, you won't be visible to marketers but will be visible to creditors :o

Thanks, that's great! I was multitasking (some what ineffectively) at the time so I didn't ask questions, just heard 'cold callers' and thought 'hell no!' Cheers :)

Just to be clear, the public do have the right to see the full voters roll and it is this version that's available for inspection at libraries, counsel offices etc. As izools said, it's also the full version that is sent to the credit reference agencies who are strictly limited by law to only use the information for credit recording purposes.

Anyone else who purchases a copy from the council will receive the edited version i.e. the version without the names and addresses of those who elected to be excluded from it by ticking the box. The information in the edited register is not protected and I believe can be used for any(?) purpose the purchaser see fit as it is a matter of public record e.g. 192.com will allow customers to search the edited 2011 electoral roll for a fee.

    Cheers,
