My pc has to have the power switched off 2/3 times before it will boot up.
All I get is:-
boot from cd.
diskette read failure.
Noboot device available, press enter to retry.
Sata-0 installed
Sata-1 installed
Sata -3 none
Sata-4 none

I have tried entry a couple of times. No joy. So I switch the pc off at the mains give it a minute and it will boot up. But today it took 4 attempts to get it to start.

It looks like your computer (BIOS) is looking for other boot devices before your hard drive. Make sure your dont have any USB storage devices (sticks, ipods...) or CDs in when you boot. You can change the default Boot order to be your primary hard drive: On boot before your operating system starts to load you may get a message saying pres F12 (or another 'F' key or DEL...) this should take you into the bios settings - have a look around for the boot order and make sure your hard drive comes before any other device.

Hope this gets you back on track.

Exactly what i was going to say, change the primary boot device to the hard drive you have your operating system installed too. then i always have dvd drive as second anyway that dont really matter just personal preference
  • As the above posters state just go into bios and change the boot order to hardrive.

if there is an option "search for other boot devices" or similar, enable it then the computer will try all and finally find the HD?
Obviously if there is a bootable media first on the list it will boot from that one so make sure there are no floppies or SD, USB sticks or CD in the drives.

I have tried all sorts of measures to rectify this! With no success. I go from F2 for set up and F12 boot menu. most times there is no hard drive then by doing the on of a hard drive comes up and no problem.
Massive request. Can I pm my telephone number to someone with free phone calls or pm their number and I will call them. Probably not allowed but it really is getting me down !

  • The previous advice is a bit duff. If you don't have a disk in the floppy drive or a CD in the CD drive then it'll boot up off the hard drive, so you don't need to change the boot order.

The problem you'll be having is that your hard drive is very possibly on its way out. When you manage to boot it up, pull all your data off it and back it up; you can either buy a replacement hard disk and do a full re-install or just keep hacking at it and backing up till it completely dies and forces you to buy a new one.
  • As SG says , + it may just may be a loose SATA connector to your disk / controller.

yeah, I'm with sg and dcm on this, first thing to do is check the security of the data and power connectors to your hdd, get it booted, back up all your data (preferably before switching it off again ;) ) and maybe a re-install......and new hdd if it still won't play :)

If your connectors are secure enough check what name is on your hard drive. If it's a Seagate Barracuda, I know exactly what is wrong with it and am 99% certain I can save all your data.
