have you tried a bit of solo experimentation with a toy? This would allow you to control the speed, depth and direction of entry. Someone else on here said you should bear down and I was reading the thread thinking the same but now sure how to describe it. At the risk of it being TMI if you can act like you are pushing something out it can make it easier for something to go it IYSWIM.

That was me, but I was referring to doing an internal self-examination to check for faeces obstructing the vagina by protruding through the sides due to constipation. I wasn't talking about masturbation.

Hi LM, if you feel like you are tensing up, it could be a condition called vaginismus. Vaginismus causes the muscles down there to spasm and close up, which makes it feel like there is a brick wall which nothing can get past (so your partner would literally be unable to get in).

Vaginismus is highly related to anxiety and is a psychological condition rather than a physical one. Lots of women experience it at some point in their lives, even when they have had pain free sex previously. As another poster said, your body and mind learn to associate sex with pain so it becomes an automatic reaction which starts off a vicious cycle.

The best way of treating vaginismus is through the use of dilators - basically "solo exploration" with different sized toys, getting bigger as you progress.

It is important that you get all the physical things checked out first of course, although the ironic thing is that all of those physical examinations create even more anxiety and pain which obviously isn't great if it is vaginismus!! Feel free to PM me for any more info if you feel that this is relevant to your situation.

    Good luck with everything!
