Gas/Electricity meter misreading - please help!

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help.
I live in a shared house and am in control of the gas +electric bill. We've been with the same company for about 2years now, which was always fine before. Every 3 months we provide meter readings to check the direct debit is still in line etc. At some point - we've started to enter them wrongly (we have a dial reader, poor excuse). Essentially, they think our last electricity reading was 46591, but it is now reading 45713, and yes, still increasing otherwise.
I rang up, because the website wouldn't accept this lower input. They sent somebody out to do a reading, and the gas reading has been updated but the electricity reading has not made it online.
Again, I called their premium rate number (online query wouldn't accept my meter reading.. could not go any further) and they said it can take two weeks for the electricity to be updated. It still hasn't, and they did the reading on September 23rd.

Where do I stand? Am I allowed to insist that despite the readings being wrong at some point, they are now VERY out (being the thousand column!) and should sort it out if they can't prove my meter was dodgy. How do I get them to actually do this? I don't want to have to keep wasting my own time and money calling them, but until they update it I can't do anything, and I can't leave to a new account with the number discrepancy!

Please help! I know, we shouldn't have started going wrong - I've no idea how that happened but it has. But will it matter when from, as we must've paid for electricity we haven't used, so shouldn't that mean we should get it back?!

Thanks!

  • It's really easy to mis-read a meter with clocks / dials and they should understand this. It sounds to me like they are awaiting the results from the agent they employ to check meter readings.

They may have received the details for the gas reading but not the electric yet, although I would have expected them to have received the details back by now - perhaps you should wait another day or two and then ring them & ask them to chase it for you?

    Regards,

    Golden
