    As I understood it there was a company that both owned the freehold and acted as managers. But they went bust at some point (I don't know why the assets weren't sold off), and the freehold and therefore I assume management responsibility went back to the crown.

    I agree the crown would surely have to take responsibility, my concern would be how good they would be to actually deal with. I have a leasehold flat and my management company do a great job, and respond quickly to any problems.
