Colour Laser Recommendations?

Hello, I'm new to MSE (but have listened to Martin on Jeremy Vine's show for as long as he's been on air!). He talked last week about printers and how you need to evaluate the lifetime cost of consumables - great advice as ever.

So I need to buy a new colour laser printer - does anyone have any particular recommendations on printers where the toner cartridges are lower in cost - or perhaps ones which have a split black and colour cartridge? Or even ones where the printer doesn't come up with the same error message as my [STRIKE]Epson[/STRIKE] sorry ! Canon inkjet when I put in a cheaper refilled cartridge?

Apologies if this has been done before - I did a search but nothing came up.

Thanks so much,
Vintage Girl :A

Which epson Inkjet have you got, mine run on Pro Jet from ukdvdr or bigpockets amongst others

With the cartridges you have, remove them, turn the printer off and remove the power lead from the printer. Leave it a couple of minutes, then replace the lead and switch the printer on, wait until it asks for the cartridges, install one cartridge, then press the ink button or close the scanner lid, see if it still does not recognise the one you have just put in

Will you need to print photos?
  • Hi Santer, apologies - I've just checked the model and it isn't even an Epson (that was our previous printer). It's a Canon MP140 but the scanner has broken too, plus our old HP Laserjet 1300 (black) has also broken - so we're looking to get a combined colour laser to do the job instead. No, I don't need to print photos - I'm a professional photographer so I have a lab that do them for me. Plus I have a small HP photo printer for proofs. It's just for clerical use really. Very frustrated with the way in which manufacturers seem to be able to program the chips inside the printers to *only* recognise their own expensive consumables!

I would look for the availability of compatible toners first, they will be there for most lasers, but not all, click any manufacturer on the left for toners to get an idea of cost

    http://www.uktonercartridges.co.uk/

    Other toner suppliers here

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=compatible+toners&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=Palemoon:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Once you have that then you can narrow it down to things like size, as some are a bit big for what they do

Then when you have decided on a couple, post a new thread asking if anyone has used them or had problems etc
  • Thanks Santer - will check those sites out :)
