Lloyds TSB Blunder - NOT PPI

Not really sure if I can do anything about this, but would be grateful if anyone has any information or advice with this problem.

I'm divorced, and had my solo bank account with Lloyds TSB for the past 4 and a half years, have previously had joint accounts (both current and savings) with my ex-husband at Lloyds TSB. Said joint accounts with Lloyds TSB have all been closed.

Today, my ex's girlfriend went into the local branch of Lloyds TSB to open a bank account (they have a joint one but she wanted a solo one).

The girl/woman she saw in there handed her some paperwork to sign to open the solo bank account, but instead of giving her details of the bank account that the girlfriend and my ex had, gave her full details of me!!!!!!!!!!!

This included my bank account numbers, my full address, telephone numbers and any other information that Lloyds TSB hold for me!!!!!

Luckily, I'm still on (limited!) talking terms with my ex husband, but he felt that he had to let me know what had happened today, as it appeared that my details could've got into the wrong hands completely, and a bank account could've been opened in my name, to say nothing of any credit cards, loans etc etc that could've been taken out in my name by the willy-nilly way that they handed my details over.

I'm going to put in an official complaint to Lloyds TSB and threaten to close my bank account, but I was wondering if anyone knew where I stood with this, especially with the Data Protection Act. Also, do you know of the email address I can send a complaint to, as I find the post takes way too long.

I would be grateful for any help with this. Thank you.

  • If third party details have been given out to anyone and you have proof of this then you have the right to complain to the information commissioners office, they wont award compensation though, that will be down to the bank - but certainly put in a complaint. The ICO would have powers to issue quite substantional fines in the case of a serious breach, but this would likely be where lots of customers are affected. More than likely he will give Lloyds a serious wrap over the knuckles.
  • Thank you for that. I will most certainly be putting in a complaint directly to Lloyds TSB, I've banked with them for over 25 years, and over the last year have not been treated very well at all by them. Although I know trainees are learning, I've been made to deal with trainees who have managed to !!!!-up nearly everything they've tried sorting out and this is the last straw. I shall certainly try the ICO too, I think someone needs to have a serious word with them. No wonder there's so much identity theft around if they give out customer's personal details to anyone who comes into their branches!
