  • If your having security trouble sometimes it helps to change from WPA to WEP.

If you do change and don't feel comfortable or whatever you can always click the reset to factory settings button and reset it all.

It's all done on the router, not the laptop/PC. You should be able to access an admin page on the router that will let you do this kind of thing

I have logged into my router I cannot see how to update, it's a NETGEAR DG834PN.

Edit: Wireless options there don't have an option for WPA2

Looks like this is the latest firmware, as it's an old-ish router. Instructions are on the page.

I think in Netgears it is on the left handside, it says "Router Upgrade" under "Maintenace". You can download the new firmware file from the manufacturers website (check if they are different for each region for example Europe, USA etc.)

Some new CABLED router do it automatically via the ISP I think so there is no option in this case.

It certainly helps anyone who wants to hack your wireless connection. WEP is obsolete and insecure.

I agree, it takes less than two minutes to crack any WEP password you can think of.

Right I have downloaded the firmware up date and I have installed. How can I check and make sure I am secure again?

What is a OOBI hotspot (unsecured)? This has appeared recently in available wireless connections

It may be something someone else has set up on their router, much like the crappy BT openzone that comes set up automatically with BT Homehubs

    *edit - It looks like a business Wifi hotspot - http://www.oobinetworks.co.uk/ *
  • In my experience this has happened when the router has rebooted itself or there has been a power cut and the router comes back online in a sort of default state and then a few seconds later remembers its settings and then becomes 'secure'
