EON Direct Debit trickery ?

I moved into my new property in January 2011 and due to us down sizing we knew we would be able to reduce the amount of money we were paying on our monthly direct debit.
Unfortunately, un be-known to us, the amount we reduced it to was far to low and over a 6 month period we ended up being £500 in arrears.
EON then set us on the correct monthly payment plan but told us that the best they could do about the arrears was to split it over 6 months which meant we are now paying an extra £83 a month on top of an extra £50 a month because of our new tariff.
We feel that even tho it was us that told them the amount we thought we should be paying a month, we still should of been warned by EON sooner than 6 months to prevent us going further and further into debt.
Also I feel we should of been able to spread the arrears over a longer period as we are now completely stretched every month.
Can anyone give me some advice on this please .
Thanks

Most suppliers wait until you have twelve months/4 quarterly bills in a property before adjusting a direct debit. Customers should check meter readings and the balances on their statements to ensure the usage is covered.0

Hi alexgeorge
I’m sorry there wasn’t much we could do to identify this earlier for you. I suspect that you’ve only had two statements from us so far.
It’s tricky when you move into a new place to work out how much you’ll spend. We can help but we really need the meter readings from your bills to forecast your use and work out your payments.
It looks like we have a much better idea of your use now and I’m glad that your payments have been adjusted before your winter bill.
I understand that repaying the arrears over 6 months on top of your peak use is leaving things tight. Once the balance has been cleared you'll be paying just for your use.
If the new payments are unmanageable for you, give us call and we’ll see what we can do to help.
