Logbook loans, any protection?

Options
So what can we do to protect ourselves when buying a secondhand car then?

Can you say register your car you bought in good faith at a parents house 80 miles away, notify the insurers so you make them aware of what and why you are doing it and maybe pay a few pounds extra if the postcode is a higher rated area?

I know theres all the bolloxs that making a false statement to the DVLA that the registered keepers address will be wrong, but who is gonna find out or care as long as your insurance company know and you pay your road tax?

Is there any way of stopping the DVLA selling your details to third parties under the data protection act?

If you had your car taken at 4 in the morning without any prior warning or correspondence and then after reporting it to the police they tell you to call Logbookloantossers Ltd so they can demand £1500 plus transport/storage costs so you get your car back, can you then find out who the original debt was with so you can throw bricks through their windows once a week for the next 3 years?

Anyone had any experiance of this?

You could try arming yourself to the teeth and sleeping in the car.

Other than that if it doesn't legally belong to you, you're stuffed.

Agree with the OP. Something needs to be done about this loophole. Im sure I read on here acouple of months ago about a scam where people were selling their car to a friend, and that friend selling it on, then a few months later saying that they hadnt given said friend permission to sell the car, so current 'keeper' had to hand the car back. logbook should mean owner, not keeper. (or something different to what we have at the moment anyway!)

Register it where you like but when it pops up as stolen on the police ANPR camera's you may
spend more time in a cell whilst they verify who you are and how you obtained the car.

Strip it for spares quickly or hide it in a lockup until its resolved in your favour.

The people that own the car, The loan company.

The loan is secured in the car. Its theirs.
