Hello

About a month ago, what with all the talk about energy price increase etc I decided it's time to sit down and actually try to work out my what my energy bills mean instead of just looking at them like a confused dog each time they arrive.

I'd been with Npower for longer than I can remember and never really consider switching as my monthly DD seemed ok (£80 dual fuel). This is silly, I know and even more so considering I know to switch my mobile and broadband contracts as soon as they expire to save with cashback/retention etc, but never gave doing this with energy supplies a second thought.

Anyways, made the switch to E.on for instant £20 per month saving and had a nice £132 credit with npower which I was looking forward to receiving. Yesterday I emailed them asking for final bill and for any credit to be credited to bank account asap. Today I received my final bill for..........£514....and that's just for electricity!!!?!?!?!

28.03.11 to 25.09.11 3749kWh at 12.810p
plus discount, add VAT = £514!!!

I noticed straight away that invoice states I'm now on 'Go Save S' tariff but I've always been on Sign Online 14, so thought that must be the mistake right there.

However, yesterday I received a new bill from E.on which I hadn't looked at yet. Open that up to find........

27.09.11 to 11.10.11 (two weeks) 1327kWh at = £146!?!??!?!

What the hell is going on???? All the readings are correct, not estimate. I feel sick. :(

Wow! Have npower deducted your payments since March against the bill of £514? Or is that your final outstanding amount? I'm with swalec and each year they re-calculate whether my standing charge is covering the amount of electricity and gas used and readjust my direct debits - so that seems excessive.

I assume that the dates are 27/9 to 11/10 not 27/10 to 11/11.

If this is so, the 27/9 to 11/10 inlcudes an element of seasonal variation which would expain the higher than expected amount from e-on.

As regards the Npower bill I have suffered this type of shock in the past. It sounds like an accumulation of under estimating where, rather than continually adjust the DD they simply let a small difference accummulate - hence the shocking result. Even when you update your meter readings they don't always take them into account.

    Check your meter readings.

Also, as I have found, Npower seem to have an arbitrary way of allocating the primary units as your bill covers 6 months it would also be worth checking that their aritmetic and method of calculation is correct. I have discovered an anomaly with my recent bill ( see Npower curious anomaly thread.) Although this may help I suspect it will only make a marginal difference - sorry!

Didnt sol14 get withdrawn not long ago reverting to the gosave tariff?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Sorry, 27.09 to 11.10 (edited opening post)

Even with seasonal variation, there is no way I should be using 1327kWh and a £146 worth of electricity in just two weeks?! Again same with npower bill, normally its around £170 for same period and has been for years.

Readings are 100% and already taken into account the different between estimate and actual, which was minimum. Last two readings were actual and customer reading (when I left them).

Gone from using around 1900kHw to 3749kHw for same period, which is just nuts. Have not used any more electricity than normal in form of new gadgets and what not.

    Please can someone help.

Just wondering why eon have sent you a two week bill ... I've just switched suppliers but not expecting first bill until December.

Are they both using the same meter reads, i.e., opening read for eon and final read from npower. Also surely npower would have blocked your move to eon until this supposed debit was cleared ?

Sol 14 was withdrawn about 18 months ago I believe so it looks as though you have been on the standard rate since then

btw both eon and npower have new systems so think system glitch as well ! Best of luck sorting this out.

No idea why I got two week bill, but its a blessing as won't have know that's extremely high either until it came six months down the line.

As before, reading are 100% correct across the board.

I was still on sign 14 online right up to my last bill six months ago.

Most important thing right now is finding out why my usage is so high? I haven't a clue?!

First step is to admit you have a problem.
    No - wait - that's alcohol.

Anyway - first turn off _EVERYTHING_ in your house, including the freezer and fridge.
This is at the normal switches, and isolators that you'd normally use. Unplug/switch it all off.

Now, see if your meter still flashes/spins/indicates power is being drawn by the little man in a top-hat pedalling.

If it does, then you need to find where this power is going.
How much is this remnant power?

If there isn't, then turn appliances on one by one, watching the increase of power used.

I would strongly recommend something like
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Eon-Energy-Monitor-Brand-New-Box-/170710091085?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Test_Measurement_Equipment_ET&hash=item27bf1d454d
(no connection with seller) - to show you your instant power use.

    However.
You say 'all the readings are correct'.
Go and read the meter now. Does the increase in reading now, since the last reading make sense?
Did you really use (around) 1400 units in two weeks, or are there other elements to the bill?

Can you check your bills again, I remembered this report because my sol13 came to an end ...

Rogerblack - I will try what you suggested. With regards to that energy kit, this looks to be the very same kit that E.on said they would send me for free when I signed up but no sign of it yet. Going to call them later.
Again, can confirm I have used 1327 in just two weeks, at least thats what reading are telling me. Readings are 100% as I took them two weeks again at request of Npower and then on Monday at request of E.on. Difference between the two readins is 1327kWh.

Meggsy - as before I was on SOL14 right up until my last bill received on 15th April 2011 which quite clearly stated Sign Online 14. Even with the switch and the 25% difference that that article suggests, that is small fry compared to what I've somehow used in just two weeks. Another three weeks like this and I would have used what an average household uses in a whole year! Either way, the tariff right now is not the issue, the issue is the usage so need to find what the hell is going on?

    Any ideas?
