HSBC FTSE100 Guaranteed Tracker

I am deciding against this I think. Its the fixed time limit that has put me off - I think I would rather have a tracker that I could leave for longer, ie until the returns are good. Rather than be forced to 'cash-in' after 6 years and maybe make no gain (and lose due to inflation!)
I'm not going for the tracker yet - my first move will be into gilts and bonds in a shares ISA. I understand there are several types here. I can either buy bonds and hold them for the fixed period, or there are funds which trade in bonds. I think I favour the former as I believe them to be a safer investment.
Trouble is I need to act quickly and I still dont have a clue how to get them!0
