It is actually the same sort of argument as "I send my kids to a private school, so I should get a rebate because I am saving the state the cost of educating them".
It is a fair enough argument, ..QUOTE]

And it's an argument that works in Australia.

    It's not exactly much money:

For the 2010–11 tax year refunds may be as much as $397 for every child at primary school, and up to $794 for every child at secondary school. The amount of the refund increases each year by the Consumer Price Index.

    http://www.educationtaxrefund.gov.au/

So about £500 per child. If you're rich enough to send your kids to private school that's not much money (plus Australia's economy isn't !!!!ed).

Not unless you take your eyes out when you leave work.:D

Seriously, anything you have the use of outside of work (even if you choose not to use it) can't be classed as a business expense. For example, your employer can't even give you a free uniform without it being taxed as a benefit, unless the employers name is visible on each part (which is supposed to stop you using it in your own time).

There's a specific exemption for some things, such as mobile phones.

Unless there's an exemption, then the duality of purpose rule applies.
  • I remember when there was a specific "poll" tax on mobile phones.

Mind you it was difficult to hide them about your person as they were the size of a house brick.

Eye surgery may not be allowable but the eye test and glasses could be (or at least a proportion) if you use a computer screen most of the day.

    See HMRC http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/nimmanual/NIM02145.htm

Although this legislation is aimed at employees it could be argued that it applies to the self-employed as long as apportioned correctly.
